I recently settled two cases the day before heading out on vacation. I told the parties that I would be available while away, but the looming trip gave them just enough urgency to close the deals before I left.
It reminded me how often deadlines drive resolution. Some cases are resolved just before summary judgment. Some only settle once the parties reach the courthouse steps.
I am a big believer in early mediation to save the parties time and money—but sometimes, pressure is the missing ingredient.
So next time a case hits a wall? Booking a vacation may be the best course of action.
